When I first heard this quote, I was puzzled. Now, it makes so much sense.
In simple terms, this means that your deeply-rooted issues and fears follow you wherever you go, if you do not resolve them first.
Personal example 1: I hated observations when I was a first grade STEM teacher. Why does the principle and admin have to come in and watch me teach, take notes, distract my class with their presence and then tell me everything I did wrong?
Well, when I moved to my next role in Academia, there weren’t any formal observations but I was micromaninged to high heaven and the pitts of hell. I hated every moment of it.
Personal example 2: I’ve had to work on customer relations. Instead of tolerating disreprect, yelling or cursing, I’ve quit. Currently, I deal with disrespect on a daily basis in the world or leasing and housing, but my skin is tougher and I take nothing personally. Sometimes, I step away just to laugh. (Especially that time when a woman cursed me out over an accent wall!) The problem was not me or the property rules, it was this woman’s entitlement – and that shouldn’t affect me.
